DELAWARE DOG LICENSE - Time is running out... Is Your Dog Licensed?
Delaware Dog License - Time is running out... Is Your Dog 6 Months or Older? Is Your Dog Vaccinated for Rabies? Is Your Dog Licensed?
As of January 1, 2010, dog licensing in the State of Delaware is no longer being administered at the state level. Dog owners must now purchase dog licenses from the county (i.e., New Castle, Kent or Sussex) in which they reside. Delaware dog licenses issued by the state prior to January 1st are valid through the expiration period. Upon expiration, Delaware dog licenses must be purchased at the county level and are valid statewide. City of Wilmington residents do not need a New Castle County Dog License, but are still re
quired to obtain a dog license from the City.
Delaware law requires that all dogs six (6) months of age or older must be licensed. Dog licenses are valid for the calendar year (expire on December 31st) and must be obtained by March 1st of licensed year. Fines for an unlicensed dog start at $50 for the first offense. Subsequent offenses could result in fines of $100. Licensing fees vary from county to county, and one, two or three year licenses may be purchased, depending on county and expiration date of the rabies vaccination.
Current rabies vaccinations are required for licensing, and if your dog has been spayed or neutered, the dog license fee is discounted. A valid certificate of rabies vaccination and proof of spay/ neuter for your dog(s) must be presented in order to receive a license and discount. Seeing eye, lead or guide dogs are exempt from the licensing fee, but must still be licensed. Also, lost tags require purchase of a new license.
